Stag do ideas: two friends in suits sharing a laugh at a hotel bar

Stag do ideas, by city: eight weekends worth the trip

These stag do ideas are for a group of friends who would rather tee off on the world's oldest playing golf course, soak in a Budapest bath or taste port above the Douro than do a bar crawl in matching T-shirts. Eight cities, each with one stay, two things to book and what two nights cost each of you.

The short answer

The best stag do ideas for 2026/27

Prices checked 19 October 2026

Our eight stag do ideas, cheapest first for two nights with the stay and two activities: Budapest (about £143 each), Amsterdam (£154), Edinburgh (£155), Prague (£198), Bristol (£219), Kraków (£220), Newcastle (£234) and Porto (£298). Travel, meals and drinks are on top.

For context, Novuna's 2025 research puts the average stag or hen do at £271 a head in the UK. Aviva's 2023 survey, which counts travel, food and drink too, found men spending £920 on a UK stag or hen weekend and £1,256 abroad.

The three UK picks are whole houses split across a group of 12 or 16, which is where the value is. The five abroad are hotels priced for two sharing a double, because a big apartment rarely publishes a price you can check. Every price is the seller's own, or a booking site's, read on 19 October 2026.

Euro, koruna and zloty prices are converted at the European Central Bank rates for 18 June 2026. Where a price is a 'from' figure, an average or dated, we say so under the item. If a driving day is the plan instead, our supercar and F1 pages price those properly.

Planning the trip around it? Start with hen do ideas, if you are planning the hen do too and supercar driving experiences, for a day on track and F1 tickets, for a race weekend instead.

"succulent and sweet"

Hilary Sturzaker, olive, on Hawksmoor Edinburgh's scallops

The best value of the UK three, and the one with the best story. Musselburgh calls itself the world's oldest playing course, with golf recorded there in 1672 and six Opens between 1874 and 1889. Nine holes, a whisky tasting and a steak at Hawksmoor is a stag day nobody needs to apologise for.

Skip it if anyone resents a four-hour train, or a queue for the shower. Book Advance tickets early and together, and know that the house has two bathrooms and three separate WCs for up to 19.

How to book it

Book the house first through Group Accommodation (2 or 3 nights). Then the tee time: book online or call the Musselburgh starter on 0131 653 5122, who also takes pre-bookings for hickory club hire (£57). The Gold Tour is over-18s only.

£1,050 split 12 ways is £87.50, plus £39.75 for the Gold Tour and £28 for nine holes: £155.25 each. We split the house 12 ways, not 19, because of the bathrooms. Hickory club hire is extra.

Michelin Guide inspectors, on The Broad Chare

The one for a groom who follows football. Sit in your favourite player's seat in the home dressing room in the morning, taste beer where it is brewed in the afternoon, and sleep in an apartment with a view of the Tyne Bridge. The Broad Chare, a Michelin Bib Gourmand pub, is on the same Quayside.

Skip it if you want a matchday. The club says matchday tours return for the 2026/27 season but gives no dates yet, and the Anarchy price we use is from a February 2026 listing.

How to book it

Book the apartments through Group Accommodation, then the stadium tour online: weekend tours run at 10.30am, 11.30am, 12.30pm, 1.30pm and 2.30pm, and private tours are available for bigger groups. Anarchy's tours are 18 and over with ID; check its next date before you fix the weekend.

£2,200 split 12 ways is £183.33, plus £26 for the stadium tour (the higher of its two prices) and £24.75 for the brewery: £234.08 each. Split 16 ways the apartments fall to £137.50 each.

"Mighty fine meat, served up by dapperly dressed waiters"

Betty James, Time Out Bristol, on The Ox

The quickest of the eight to reach, and the best for a big group. A mansion that sleeps 50 means nobody is left out, the Beer Factory pours three pints on its tour and a free one at its tap room afterwards, and a boat of your own on the harbour costs less than £20 each when 16 of you share it.

Skip it if you want to walk out of the door into the centre. The Gothic Mansion is in Knowle, in south Bristol, so plan taxis. Bristol Packet boats have their own bar and do not allow you to bring drinks.

How to book it

Book the house through Group Accommodation, then the brewery: Saturday 2pm tours up to 28 November 2026 are already sold out, and groups of 10 or more can book a private tour from £300. Bristol Packet takes a £150 deposit, with the balance on the day.

£2,800 split 16 ways is £175, plus £25 for the brewery tour and £302.50 for the boat split 16 ways (£18.91): £218.91 each. Split 12 ways it would be about £284 each.

Spring and early autumn, for evenings on the river

"If you're looking for a nice steakhouse in Prague, Cestr is your place."

Matthew Klint, Live and Let's Fly

The beer pilgrimage, done properly. The Pilsner Urquell tour ends in the lager cellars with a glass of unfiltered, unpasteurised beer poured from an oak cask, the jazz boat takes the evening, and Čestr serves the steak. The Julius has suites with kitchens, which suits a group that likes a late breakfast.

Skip it if you want a pub crawl. Prague announced a ban on organised bar crawls between 10pm and 6am in October 2024. And the brewery is in Plzeň, at least 1 hour 23 minutes each way by train.

How to book it

Book flights first, then The Julius. Pilsner Urquell runs English tours daily at 12.45pm, 2.15pm and 4.15pm; groups of 10 or more can choose their own date if they order 3 days ahead. Book the jazz boat for the evening you get back from Plzeň.

The Julius's cheapest double in the next 60 days was €195.25 a night, so two nights sharing is about €195 each. Add €25 for the jazz boat: €220.25, about £192. Add CZK 190 (about £7) for the brewery: about £198 each. The train to Plzeň, flights and breakfast (€30) are extra.

How to book it

Book flights first, then Puro. Book the salt mine for the morning: the route opens 8am to 6pm and the visit takes two to three hours. The vodka tasting runs 1 hour 30 minutes; check availability for the whole group before you pay.

Kayak's average for a Friday or Saturday night at Puro over the past two weeks was £155 for a double, so two nights sharing is £155 each. Add 134 zloty (about £27) for the salt mine and £38 for the tasting: about £220 each. Flights are extra.

"If you want the best beef for the money, Pampas"

Hungary Unlocked, on Budapest's steakhouses

The cheapest of the eight and, for a lot of grooms, the best. A day in the thermal pools at Széchenyi, an evening on the Danube with a glass of champagne or a beer, and Pampas serves a rump steak for about £18. A stag weekend that is also a proper rest.

Skip it if you had your heart set on Gellért. Budapest Trip reported in July 2026 that Gellért tickets were unavailable, so check before you plan around it.

How to book it

Book flights first, then Hotel Rum. Buy Széchenyi tickets online for a fixed day and add a cabin (about €4 to €6 more) if you want somewhere private to change. The champagne or beer cruise leaves Dock 7 between 7.30pm and 10pm.

Hotel Rum's cheapest double in the next 60 days was €103.81 a night, so two nights sharing is about €104 each. Add €35 (the top of Széchenyi's weekend range) and €25 for the cruise: €164, about £143 each. The hotel price is a 'from' rate; weekends may cost more. Flights are extra.

The one you can reach without an airport. Take the train, spend the afternoon on a boat of your own with a skipper and drinks waiting on board, and end the night in the rooftop hot tub at Volkshotel. With 12 sharing the boat, it costs about €35 each.

Skip it if you want to stay in the canal ring. Volkshotel is about 2.4km from the centre; The Hoxton on Herengracht averaged €449 a weekend night on the same day.

How to book it

Book the Eurostar first: Saturdays have only three trains. Then Volkshotel, then the boat: Mokumboot boards near Centraal or at NEMO, and charges €4 a person an hour if you bring your own drinks. The Heineken Experience opens 10.30am to 9pm from Friday to Sunday.

Kayak's average for a Friday or Saturday night at Volkshotel over the past two weeks was €117 for a double, so two nights sharing is €117 each. Add €24.95 for Heineken and €425 split 12 ways (€35.42) for the boat: €177.37, about £154 each. Tourist tax and the train are extra.

"Porto's best francesinha"

Time Out, on Cafe Santiago

The grown-up one. Taste a Six Grapes, an LBV and a 10-year-old tawny in Graham's lodge above Gaia, take the boat under the six bridges, and sleep on the Ribeira waterfront. Then eat a francesinha at Cafe Santiago, which Time Out rates the best in Porto.

Skip it if the budget is tight. The Pestana Vintage averages more than twice what Volkshotel does in Amsterdam, and it is about 2.4km from Porto's centre as Kayak measures it.

How to book it

Book flights first, then the hotel. Graham's tours are in English and you cannot pick an exact slot, so book it before the cruise. Cruise tickets bought online are valid only on boats leaving from Ribeira, which is right outside the hotel.

Kayak's average for a Friday or Saturday night at the Pestana Vintage over the past two weeks was €293 for a double, so two nights sharing is €293 each. Add €30 for Graham's and €20 for the cruise: €343, about £298 each. A €40 tasting with food pairings is the step up. Flights are extra.

Questions

Stag do ideas: what people ask

Where to go for a stag do in the UK?

Of our three, Edinburgh is the best value at about £155 each for two nights, with nine holes on Musselburgh Old Links and a whisky tasting.
