Hogmanay Edinburgh 2026: the ten worth a ticket or a room

The short answer

Hogmanay Edinburgh 2026: the ten worth booking

Prices checked 20 October 2026

Our ten for Hogmanay Edinburgh 2026, cheapest first for two people: the Loony Dook (free), the Torchlight Procession (from £22 for a torch), the McEwan Hall Festival Club (from £55), the Street Party (£78), the Night Afore Party (from £84), Underworld in the Gardens (£158), Prestonfield's Hogmanay Ball (£390), Archerfield House (£2,050), Cringletie House (£3,130) and Gleneagles (from £11,460).

The official Hogmanay Edinburgh programme runs four days, from the Torchlight Procession on Tuesday 29 December 2026 to New Year's Day. The big night is Thursday 31 December, when you choose between the Street Party on Princes Street and Underworld's concert in West Princes Street Gardens. One ticket does not get you into the other, so pick before you pay.

The hotel nights split two ways. Stay in town, near a Street Party gate, and walk home after the fireworks; or go out of the city to a country house with its own dinner, ceilidh or piper at midnight. No central five-star hotel had published a priced 2026 Hogmanay package when we checked, so the city stays here are Prestonfield's ball and the Travel Office packages in the FAQs.

Every price is the organiser's or the hotel's own, read on 20 October 2026. Where official pages and independent guides disagree, or a page does not say per room or per person, we say so under the item.

Planning the trip around it? Start with New Year's Eve breaks across the UK and Europe, including a quieter Hogmanay at Dalhousie Castle, eight miles out and UK Christmas markets, Edinburgh's among them, for a December trip before the big night.

"the best New Year's celebration in the world"

The Hotel Guru, on Edinburgh's Hogmanay

The night the city is known for, and the cheapest way in on 31 December. You are inside the barriers with the castle above you and fireworks every hour from nine. Choose your gate by where you are staying: the East Gate by The Balmoral suits the New Town hotels, the South Gate the Old Town.

Skip it if you hate crowds, queues or the cold. You stand outdoors on a December night, there is no re-entry once you leave, bags must be no bigger than A3, and under-12s are not allowed.

How to book it

Buy only from the three official sellers: the organiser says there is no official resale and tickets on Eventbrite or secondary sites are not valid. Your gate is fixed when you buy and cannot be changed. Street Party tickets do not get you into the Concert in the Gardens.

The official event page says only 'from £10', which appears to be the silent disco add-on; the £39 standard price is from the Edinburgh Tourism Guide (updated 8 October 2026) and matches Independent Travel Cats ('from around £39'). TripScot quotes £33 for an adult at an earlier check.

What you get
Underworld's headline set, special guests to be announced, and their live soundtrack to the Midnight Moment, with lights, projections and fireworks from Edinburgh Castle

Since 10am on Friday 26 June 2026; paperless e-tickets
Best for
Seeing in 2027 at a proper gig, with the best view of the castle fireworks

The grown-up pick for 31 December. It is Underworld's first Hogmanay headline slot in the Gardens, and their set soundtracks midnight itself. The Enclosure is only £10 more each than the Gardens, so book it if you want to be near the stage.

Skip it if you also want the Street Party. A Gardens ticket does not include Princes Street, outside alcohol is not allowed, and you stand outdoors for up to four hours.

How to book it

Book through edinburghshogmanay.com, Ticketmaster or Tickets Scotland. Ages 12 and over only; under-18s need an adult. Premium Area tickets came with their own concessions and toilets, but the platform has sold out, so the Enclosure is now the top tier.

West Princes Street Gardens, beneath Edinburgh Castle

Best for
A big night out without the 31 December crowds or prices

The warm-up that is a full gig in its own right, in the same gardens as the main concert a night earlier. It leaves 31 December free for a hotel dinner or the Street Party, and it costs about half the price of the Underworld show.

Skip it if you are not a Fratellis fan. The support acts have not been named yet, so this is a Fratellis night first and foremost.

How to book it

Book through the official sellers. Ages 12 and over; under-16s need an adult. The Premium Area has a raised platform with its own bar and toilets; general standing areas are not wheelchair accessible, but an accessible viewing area is reached from Kings Stables Road.

The oldest-feeling part of Hogmanay, and the start of the festival

The part of Hogmanay Edinburgh you take part in rather than watch. It opens the festival two nights before the big one, it sells out every year, and it is cheap. Premium tickets add a pre-event show at McEwan Hall, a dedicated access lane, a torch and a souvenir lanyard.

Skip it if you would rather not walk for two hours in late December with fire in your hand. It is 12 and over only, and the organiser does not recommend it for younger children.

How to book it

Book through the official sellers, and buy at least one torch between two of you. £2 from each torch and £1 from each procession ticket go to local charities. The Travel Office sells it as an add-on to its packages.

The organiser's 8 October 2026 announcement gives 'from £22, including torches, booking fees and charity donation'; the event page shows 'from £5.75', which we take to be the extra-walker ticket. Premium prices were not shown.

Scottish traditional music with a seat and a roof

New for 2026, and the best answer on this page to the cold. Julie Fowlis brings a full band on 30 December, and the opening night pairs Blazin' Fiddles with Karen Matheson straight after the Torchlight Procession. It is also the cheapest ticketed music of the festival.

Skip it if you came for a dance. These are concerts, and the indoor ceilidhs promised in the programme had no dates, venues or prices when we checked.

How to book it

Book through edinburghshogmanay.com. The opening concert follows the Torchlight Procession on 29 December, so the two make a full first night of the festival.

The organiser gives 'from £27.50, including booking fees' for the Festival Club and for Muckle Be The Light; it does not list each concert's price separately.

Clearing the head on New Year's Day

The maddest tradition of the four days, and the cheapest. Watching from the harbour wall with a hot drink is the sane way to do it; swimming is for the brave. It has been community run and free since January 2022, so it is no longer sold through the Hogmanay box office.

Skip it if you are not a confident cold-water swimmer, or you were at the Street Party until one. The Forth in January is cold, and the timings were still unconfirmed when we checked.

How to book it

Check the latest timings nearer the day; no registration had opened when we checked. Do not pay for a place until an organiser confirms one is needed: Edinburgh 24/7 says registration 'usually costs around £12', but three other guides describe it as free.

Edinburgh Tourism Guide, TripScot and Independent Travel Cats all describe the Loony Dook as free and community run; Edinburgh 24/7 says registration 'usually costs around £12'. No official 2027 page was found.

How to book it

Book directly with Archerfield House. Drink upgrades beyond the house list cost extra, and terms and conditions apply. Confirm the number of nights when you book: the page's summary says three, its details say two.

A milestone New Year away from the Hogmanay Edinburgh crowds

The splurge. Gleneagles puts on three days of food, tastings and entertainment, and it is the only package here that keeps children busy while the adults are at a whisky tasting. It costs more than three times the next dearest stay, so it is for a big birthday or a family gathering.

Skip it if you want Edinburgh's fireworks. Gleneagles is in Perthshire, dinner at Restaurant Andrew Fairlie is extra, and a 5% service charge goes on the room and 12.5% on dining.

How to book it

Book on the Gleneagles offer page or by phone. Pre-book coach or minibus transfers from the airport; a private chauffeur costs extra. Ask whether the price is per room before you commit.

Gleneagles shows 'from £11,460' for the three-night stay without saying per room or per person; the extra-night price is per room, so we read it as per room. Confirm at booking.
