The short answer

The best safari lodges, in one paragraph

The best safari lodges are chosen by where the animals are when you travel: the Masai Mara and the Serengeti for the Great Migration, the Okavango Delta for water and elephants, and Greater Kruger for leopard and the Big Five on a shorter trip. Our 2026 shortlist has 10 safari lodges, each with a Michelin Key or a Forbes Travel Guide star rating. The most decorated are JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge, Hemingways Ol Seki Mara Camp and Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti.

Shortlisted means chosen on research: a Michelin Key or Forbes Travel Guide rating, or praise from two independent publications, each linked below. We have not stayed at these hotels yet. Read how we choose.

Choose an area of Africa

Migration crossings

The best hotels in the Masai Mara, Kenya

Open grassland along the Mara and Talek rivers, best known for the wildebeest migration from roughly July to October and for big cat sightings all year. The national reserve can be busy with vehicles in peak months, while the private conservancies on its northern edge cap vehicle numbers and allow walks and night drives.

Stay here if
First safaris, photographers and anyone timing a trip around the migration
From the airport
Scheduled light aircraft from Nairobi Wilson to a Mara airstrip, about 45 to 60 minutes, then a road transfer

Shortlisted 2026

JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge

A 20-tent camp with an open-air restaurant and spa on the Talek River, inside the main reserve.

20 tents. Private pools: not confirmed; Michelin lists shared pools.

  • Families
  • Photography
Skip it ifIt is inside the national reserve rather than a conservancy, so expect other vehicles at sightings in migration season.

Shortlisted 2026

Hemingways Ol Seki Mara Camp

A nine-tent conservancy camp that Michelin praises for having no crowds and no convoys.

9 tents. Private pools: no; one shared pool listed.

  • Honeymoons
  • Walking safaris
  • Photography
Skip it ifWith nine tents it books out early for the migration months, and there is little to do in camp beyond the pool.

The herds, all year

The best hotels in the Serengeti, Tanzania

A vast plain of grass and granite kopjes that hosts the southern and western stages of the great migration, from calving in the south early in the year to river crossings in the north later on. Central Serengeti holds resident game year-round, which makes it a reliable base in any month.

Stay here if
Longer safaris, migration followers and families who want space
From the airport
Scheduled light aircraft from Arusha or Kilimanjaro to Seronera or another Serengeti airstrip, about 1 to 2 hours depending on stops

Shortlisted 2026

Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti

A full-service lodge with an infinity pool above a waterhole, a spa and a cultural Discovery Centre.

77 keys. Private pools: shared infinity pool; private plunge pools not confirmed by our sources.

  • Families
  • Wellness
Skip it ifWith 77 rooms, suites and villas it is large for a safari lodge and feels more resort than camp.

* Affiliate link: we earn a commission if you book, at no extra cost to you. It never decides what we recommend.

Water and elephants

The best hotels in the Okavango Delta, Botswana

An inland delta of channels, lagoons and palm islands that floods each winter, so game viewing mixes mokoro and boat trips with drives. Most camps are reached only by light aircraft and run on low-volume, high-cost tourism.

Stay here if
Honeymooners, return safari-goers and anyone wanting water-based safari
From the airport
Light aircraft from Maun or Kasane to a camp airstrip, about 20 to 60 minutes

Shortlisted 2026

Xigera Safari Lodge

Botswana's only MICHELIN Key property, with 12 tented suites each served by a private butler.

12 tents. Private pools: not confirmed; Michelin lists a shared outdoor pool.

  • Honeymoons
  • Photography
Skip it ifRates sit at the top of the Delta market and, with 12 suites, it needs booking far ahead.

Leopards and the Big Five

The best hotels in Sabi Sands and Greater Kruger, South Africa

Private reserves along Kruger National Park's western boundary share unfenced land with the park, and off-road driving allows close leopard sightings. Malaria risk is low to moderate, flights from Johannesburg are short, and the lodges are among the most polished in Africa.

Stay here if
First safaris, families, short trips and leopard photography
From the airport
Flights from Johannesburg or Cape Town to Skukuza, Hoedspruit (Eastgate) or Kruger Mpumalanga, then a road transfer or a hop to a lodge airstrip

Hillside suites inside Kruger itself, with meals, drinks and twice-daily drives or walks included.

15 keys. Private pools: not confirmed.

  • Honeymoons
  • Walking safaris
  • Photography
Skip it ifThe suites are contemporary rather than classic thatch and canvas, which will not suit everyone.

Silvan Safari Lodge

Six suites, each with a plunge pool, in a Relais and Châteaux lodge in the Sabi Sand.

6 keys. Private pools: yes, a plunge pool in each suite.

  • Honeymoons

18 keys. Private pools: not confirmed; Michelin lists shared pools.

  • Families

Questions people ask

Africa hotels, answered

What are the best safari lodges in 2026?

Our 2026 shortlist has 10 lodges across Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana and South Africa, including Londolozi, Royal Malewane and Singita Lebombo in Greater Kruger and Xigera in the Okavango. Every pick holds a Michelin Key or a Forbes Travel Guide rating.

Which country is best for a first safari?

Kenya for the Masai Mara and a direct flight from London, or South Africa for Greater Kruger, which combines easily with Cape Town and has very reliable leopard sightings. Botswana suits a second safari.

When is the best time to go on safari?

In East Africa, July to October for the river crossings and January to February for the calving. In Botswana and South Africa, the dry winter from May to October, when animals gather at water.

Why is this shortlist short?

Because we only include lodges with a Michelin Key, a Forbes Travel Guide rating or praise from two independent judges. Many excellent camps have neither yet, and we will add them as we verify them ourselves.

How do you get to a safari lodge?

Usually by a short light-aircraft flight from Nairobi, Arusha, Maun or Johannesburg to a bush airstrip, with strict soft-bag luggage limits. Some Greater Kruger lodges can also be reached by road.

Have you stayed at these lodges?

Not yet. Every lodge on the 2026 list is Shortlisted on research. Lodges we stay at will carry the Stayed and verified stamp, and any hosted stay will be disclosed on the page.
