Seasonal · UK Christmas markets
Our Christmas markets UK guide is for a weekend that feels special: ten markets with their real 2026 dates, the train from London, one hotel worth it and an honest cost for two.

The short answer
Prices checked 20 October 2026
Our Christmas markets UK pick, cheapest first for two nights for two with rail from London: Cardiff (about £451), Winchester (£559), Birmingham (£560), Chester (£590), Manchester (£687), York (£1,056), Bath (£1,131), Edinburgh (£2,194) and London's Winter Wonderland (£2,287). Glasgow is the tenth, but we could not read a fair hotel price for it. Meals, drinks and what you buy at the stalls are on top.
None of the ten needs a flight. Winchester is under an hour from Waterloo, Bath, Birmingham and Cardiff are under two hours, Edinburgh is about four hours from King's Cross and Glasgow about four and a half from Euston, and Winter Wonderland is in London itself. If the journey is half the point, our luxury train journeys page has the longer rail trips, and the Edinburgh and Glasgow markets both run on into the new year if you want to stay for our New Year's Eve breaks.
Every hotel is a well-reviewed one a short walk from the stalls, and every weekend cost shows its arithmetic under the item. Rail is the cheapest flexible off-peak fare we could read for each route; booking Advance tickets early will usually cost less.
Dates are the 2026 dates each market, council or a dated listing that cites them publishes, read on 20 October 2026. Birmingham opens first, on 5 November, and Bath last, on 26 November. Bath closes earliest, on 13 December; Edinburgh, Glasgow Green, Winter Wonderland and two of Manchester's sites run to 3 January 2027.
Planning the trip around it? Start with Christmas markets in Europe, ten weekends from London and New Year's Eve breaks, to stay on for Hogmanay and luxury train journeys, if the train is half the point.

01 · A Yorkshire makers' market in the medieval streets
From 1 hour 45 minutes from King's Cross
The one to start with. The fair runs from Parliament Street through to St Sampson's Square, 85% of its traders are from Yorkshire, and the Shambles Market next door adds the food stalls. Grays Court is 170 yards from the Minster, so the whole weekend is on foot. At under two hours from London on the fastest trains, it is the quickest of the northern markets to reach.
Skip it if you can only go on a Saturday afternoon. Hunters' top tip is a weekday, because weekends get very busy from late November. Avoid Tuesdays too: the fair is shut on Tuesdays in 2026.
How to do it
Book the hotel first, because December is Grays Court's dearest month on KAYAK. Then the train: LNER now prices each direction separately, with Advance fares from £18 each way on Trainline and a Super Off-Peak fare of £75 each way if you want to change your plans.
Two nights at €449 (KAYAK's December average, about £378) is £756. Rail for two is £300: LNER's Super Off-Peak fare of £75 each way, so £150 each. Total about £1,056. Advance fares from £18 each way would bring it nearer £828.

02 · Chalets from Abbeygate Street up to Milsom Street
About 1 hour 22 minutes from Paddington
"one of the UK's most iconic festive markets"
Great West Way
The prettiest city weekend under 90 minutes from London. The chalets spread from Abbeygate Street down Bath Street and up Milsom Street, entry is free, and The Gainsborough is 109 metres from the city centre and 204 metres from the abbey. Short as the season is, GWR adds extra Saturday trains while the market is on.
Skip it if you can only go in late December. Bath has the shortest run here, 18 days, and closes on Sunday 13 December, the earliest of the ten.
How to do it
Book the hotel first: The Gainsborough's weekend average on KAYAK was nearly double its weeknight one ($615 against $342). A Thursday and Friday night is the cheaper way to do it. Then the train: Advance fares start at £25 each way, the Off-Peak return is £104.70 and the Super Off-Peak return £75.90.
Two nights at $615 (KAYAK's Friday and Saturday average over the past two weeks, about £461; it gives no December figure) is £922. Rail for two is £209.40: GWR's Off-Peak return at £104.70 each. Total about £1,131. The Super Off-Peak return (£75.90) would save £57.60.

03 · A market in Princes Street Gardens, under the castle
From 4 hours from King's Cross
The grand one. Around 70 stalls fill East Princes Street Gardens below the castle, with the Big Wheel and an 80-metre Star Flyer above them, and most vendors are local or Scottish. The Balmoral is 0.3 miles from the gardens. The market runs to 3 January, so a late-December weekend can roll into the Torchlight Procession on 29 December.
Skip it if the budget matters. The Balmoral's recent weekend average is $1,370 a night, and it is four hours each way on the fastest train.
How to do it
Book the train as soon as LNER opens the dates you want: there is no longer a flexible off-peak fare between London and Edinburgh, and Advance fares start at £34.40 each way. Lumo, from £19.90 each way, is the cheaper option if its times suit. Then book The Balmoral.
Two nights at $1,370 (KAYAK's Friday and Saturday average over the past two weeks, about £1,028; it gives no December figure) is £2,056. Rail for two is £137.60: LNER Advance from £34.40 each way, the only fare we could price, as LNER has dropped off-peak fares to Edinburgh. Total about £2,194.

04 · 128 chalets in a cathedral close
From 56 minutes from Waterloo
"Often touted as one of the best Christmas markets in Europe"
Hoseasons
The best value for a setting this good. The chalets fill the grounds of the cathedral, the market has grown from 40 stalls when it began in 2006 to 128 in 2026, and entry is free with no timed slots. Hotel du Vin is a ten-minute walk away. Under an hour from Waterloo, it works as easily for one night as for two.
Skip it if you mind crowds. Luxury Columnist puts visitors at over 450,000 a year, and the Makers' Market in the cloisters is up a flight of stairs.
How to do it
Book the hotel first, then the train: Advance fares start at £9.50 each way and the Off-Peak return is £40.60, so the train is the easy part. Go on a Friday or Saturday if you want the late opening to 8pm.
Two nights at $318 (KAYAK's Friday and Saturday average over the past two weeks, about £239; it gives no December figure) is £478. Rail for two is £81.20: the Off-Peak return from £40.60 each. Total about £559.

05 · More than 210 stalls across ten city-centre sites
About 2 hours 15 minutes from Euston
"More than 210 stalls across 10 locations in the city centre."
Manchester's Finest
The biggest crawl on the list. Ten sites, from Albert Square to the Corn Exchange, open from early November, and two of them carry on into January. The Midland, rated 8.7 by more than 5,700 KAYAK reviewers, is one of the cheaper stays here, so the money goes on the stalls and the bars between them.
Skip it if you want one pretty square. Manchester is a walk between ten sites in a big city centre, not a single old-town market.
How to do it
Book the hotel first, then the train. Avanti's Off-Peak fares start at £76.30, and a limited number of Advance singles cost less. Most of the markets close on 22 December, so go before then unless you only want Albert Square and Cathedral Gardens.
Two nights at $254 (KAYAK's Friday and Saturday average over the past two weeks, about £191; it gives no December figure) is £382. Rail for two is £305.20: Avanti's Off-Peak fare from £76.30, which we treat as each way, so £152.60 each. Total about £687.

06 · German stalls on New Street and Victoria Square
Around 1 hour 30 minutes from Euston
"the largest authentic German market outside of Germany or Austria"
ITV News Central
The German market without the Eurostar. It runs for seven weeks, opens first of the ten and trades right up to Christmas Eve. The Grand, 201 metres from the centre and rated 9.0, is one of the cheapest good hotels on this page even at its December price.
Skip it if you wanted the full length of New Street. Works on Bennetts Hill and Temple Street mean no stalls between Nando's and the Apple Store in 2026.
How to do it
Book the hotel first, then the train: Avanti's Off-Peak singles start at £50.50, with Advance tickets cheaper still. Note the late opening at 1pm on Remembrance Sunday, 8 November.
Two nights at ₱14,899 (KAYAK's December average, about £179) is £358. Rail for two is £202: Avanti's Off-Peak single from £50.50 each way, so £101 each. Total about £560.

07 · About 80 chalets between the town hall and the cathedral
From 2 hours 4 minutes from Euston
"traditional wooden chalets filled with unique handmade gifts"
Hoseasons
The small-city pick in the north. About 80 wooden chalets sit on Town Hall Square and Northgate Street, a few minutes from the cathedral, and The Chester Grosvenor is 95 yards from the centre of it all. A direct train in about two hours makes it as easy as York, and cheaper.
Skip it if you want a long evening at the stalls early in the week. From Sunday to Wednesday the market shuts at 6.30pm.
How to do it
Book the hotel first: KAYAK's December average at The Chester Grosvenor is well above its recent weekend one. Then the train: Avanti lists Off-Peak singles from £34.50. Go Thursday to Saturday for the 8pm close.
Two nights at $301 (KAYAK's December average, about £226) is £452. Rail for two is £138: Avanti's Off-Peak single from £34.50 each way, so £69 each. Total about £590.

08 · Wooden chalets in the streets around St John Street
From 1 hour 44 minutes from Paddington
"A firm fixture in the Welsh capital's festive offering."
Nation.Cymru
The best value on the page. Seventy stalls, plus a rotating line-up of more than 200 more, fill St John Street and the streets around it, and The Parkgate is 0.3 miles from the castle. Under two hours from Paddington and the cheapest weekend of the ten, it is the easy first trip.
Skip it if you want the stalls after dark. The market closes at 6pm most days and 5pm on Sundays, with a 7pm close only on Thursdays in December.
How to do it
Book the hotel first, then the train: GWR Advance fares start at £29 and the Off-Peak return is £80.40. Arrive on a Thursday in December for the one late opening.
Two nights at $193 (KAYAK's Friday and Saturday average over the past two weeks, about £145; it gives no December figure) is £290. Rail for two is £160.80: the Off-Peak return from £80.40 each. Total about £451.

09 · A ticketed Christmas fair with stalls and an ice bar
In central London: no train from London needed
"Home to the UK's largest open-air ice rink"
Hoseasons
The one for Londoners, or anyone who wants the market as one evening of a bigger city weekend. Winter Wonderland is more fair than market, with rides, shows and themed bars around the stalls, and it runs on to 3 January. Pair it with the Mandarin Oriental, 0.6 miles from Hyde Park on KAYAK's measure, and you never need a train.
Skip it if you want a free wander. Entry needs a booked slot (Off-Peak from £1, Standard £5.50, Peak £8.25), rides cost extra, and the Mandarin Oriental makes this the dearest weekend on the page.
How to do it
Book the hotel first, then the entry slots: weekday slots in November are the cheapest, and later slots and weekends are Peak. Spending over £25 in a single online booking makes entry free.
Two nights at $1,513 (KAYAK's Friday and Saturday average over the past two weeks, about £1,135; KAYAK says December averages 36% more) is £2,270. Peak entry for two is £16.50. Total about £2,287, with no rail.

10 · St Enoch Square chalets and a winter fair on Glasgow Green
From 4 hours 31 minutes from Euston
The late-night one. St Enoch Square stays open until 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays, with a wheel, a carousel and a bar with live music every day, and Glasgow Green adds an ice rink, rides and a big top through to 3 January. It is mostly food and drink rather than crafts, so treat it as a city weekend with a market, not the other way round.
Skip it if you want a crafts market. Glasgow Green is mostly food and drink stalls, and George Square's own Christmas village had no published 2026 programme when we checked.
How to do it
Book the train early: Trip.com showed fares from about £20.25 each way, though that fare had sold out for the date we looked at. Then the hotel, which is a short walk from St Enoch Square. Rides, the wheel and the ice rink need tickets; entry to both sites is free.
Not costed. KAYAK showed the hotel only in a dollar it did not name, with no December or weekend average, so we have left the total out rather than guess. Rail on Trip.com started at about £20.25 each way.

The price ladder
What each Christmas markets UK weekend costs: two nights in a double at our named hotel plus rail for two from London, at the cheapest flexible off-peak fare we could read (LNER Advance for Edinburgh; Winter Wonderland entry for London). Meals, drinks and market shopping are extra. Glasgow is left out because we could not read a fair hotel price. US$1 is treated as about £0.750, €1 as £0.842 and ₱1 as about £0.012.

Questions
For a weekend from London, our pick of the Christmas markets UK-wide is York's St Nicholas Fair: a market of mostly Yorkshire traders in medieval streets, under two hours from King's Cross on the fastest trains. For a shorter hop, Winchester's cathedral market is from 56 minutes from Waterloo, and Cardiff is the cheapest weekend, at about £451 for two.
There is no official answer, but three settings make the strongest case. Winchester puts 128 chalets in the grounds of its cathedral, York fills the streets below the Minster, and Edinburgh's market sits in Princes Street Gardens under the castle and runs on to 3 January, into Hogmanay.
London's biggest, Winter Wonderland, is in Hyde Park from Thursday 19 November 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027, closed on Christmas Day. Entry is by a booked time slot: Off-Peak from £1, Standard £5.50 and Peak £8.25, and spending over £25 in one online booking makes entry free.
Mostly in November. In 2026, Birmingham opens on 5 November, Manchester and Glasgow's St Enoch Square on 6 November, York and Cardiff on 12 November, Edinburgh on 14 November, Chester on 18 November, Winter Wonderland on 19 November, Winchester on 20 November and Bath on 26 November. Most close between 13 and 24 December; Edinburgh, Glasgow Green and Winter Wonderland run to 3 January 2027.
No. The City of Lincoln Council stopped the market after 2022 over crowd safety; Time Out reported it drew over 320,000 visitors that year. In a council debate in December 2024, the councillor responsible said the council would support a private market with advice, but not money. In October 2025 the Greater Lincolnshire Mayor, Andrea Jenkyns, said she was working on a trial event, but we found no 2026 market announced.
There is no official count, but Manchester has the strongest claim by size: more than 210 stalls across 10 city-centre sites in 2026. Birmingham's Frankfurt Christmas Market is described as the largest authentic German market outside Germany or Austria, and Winchester's has grown to 128 chalets.
For two nights for two in a well-reviewed hotel near the market, with rail from London, our picks run from about £451 in Cardiff to about £2,194 in Edinburgh, or £2,287 for Winter Wonderland with the Mandarin Oriental. Meals, drinks and what you buy at the stalls are on top.

How we chose: markets a UK traveller can reach by train from London (or, for Winter Wonderland, without one), each with 2026 dates published by the market, its council or a dated listing that cites them, a well-reviewed hotel within a short walk, and a weekend cost for two built from KAYAK's published hotel averages and the cheapest flexible off-peak rail fare we could read, checked on 20 October 2026. No one paid to be included. Every price and specification links to where we checked it on 20 October 2026. How we choose.
