The Spa Village is fed by Bath's own hot springs, with natural thermal pools at different temperatures, and spa rooms that bring the thermal water into the bathroom. How to choose between winter spa breaks

Most spa breaks look alike in a brochure: a pool, a robe, a treatment. What separates a good one is what you can use, when, and with whom. Five questions settle it before you book.

Is the good part of the spa included?

Many spa hotels split the spa in two. At Rudding Park, every guest gets the indoor pool and the log sauna, but the Roof Top Spa, with its hot pools and ice baths, is included only on a spa break or in a spa room; otherwise it is an extra £43 a person for two hours booked ahead. Read what the room rate includes, not just what the hotel has.

Heated water, or thermal water?

Nearly every UK spa pool is mains water, heated. Bath is the exception: The Gainsborough's Spa Village runs on the city's natural hot springs, and it is the only hotel in the UK with a natural thermal spa inside it. If the water itself is the point, that settles it. If you want the hot and cold ritual, a hydrotherapy pool and an ice bath matter more than where the water comes from.

Who else will be there?

A spa that sells day passes is busier in the day than one kept for residents. The Gainsborough sells spa days to visitors, and Coworth Park runs spa days every day of the week, so the quietest hours at both are early and late. Families change the mood too: Coworth Park keeps set family swim times in the morning and afternoon, and Rudding Park keeps its Roof Top Spa for over-16s.

How far is it, really?

A spa break is short, so travel time eats into it. From London, Coworth Park is about 45 minutes by car and 20 from Heathrow. Bath is a city break as much as a spa break, with the streets on the doorstep. Harrogate rewards two nights rather than one, and the Roof Top Spa is open in all weather, which makes a January weekend a good bet rather than a gamble.

What will you do between treatments?

Think about the hours you are not in the water. Coworth Park has a Michelin-starred restaurant, Woven by Adam Smith, horses and parkland. Bath has the city. Rudding Park has gardens and grounds to walk. Pick the place you would happily spend the afternoon in, and the spa becomes the reason to stay another night.
