The best time to visit Sri Lanka, month by month
Two monsoons take turns across one small island, so somewhere on its coast the sea is always calm. The trick is knowing which side, and when.

The short answer
When to go, in one paragraph
The best time to visit Sri Lanka is December to March, when the south and west coasts, the hill country and the Cultural Triangle are all dry at once. The island has two monsoons, though. The Yala monsoon soaks the south-west from roughly May to September, while the Maha monsoon brings rain to the north and east from about October to January. So the east coast, around Trincomalee and Pasikudah, is at its best from May to September. Lowland days run at 26 to 33°C all year; the hills are cooler at 15 to 25°C.
- For the south and westDec to MarGalle, Mirissa and Bentota dry out, and blue whale trips run off the south coast.
- For the east coastMay to SepTrincomalee and Pasikudah are calm and sunny while the south-west takes its monsoon.
- For festivals and elephantsAugKandy's Esala Perahera and the Minneriya elephant gathering, both at their peak.

December to April · Mirissa
Blue water, blue whales
When the Yala monsoon lifts, the south coast from Galle round to Tangalle turns into the island's calmest stretch of sea. Mirissa is the base for whale watching, and Sri Lanka Tourism gives November to April as the main season. Blue whales and sperm whales are the prize, and spinner dolphins are a common sight on the way out. Sightings are never guaranteed, so treat a morning at sea as a chance rather than a promise, and pair it with a few nights inside Galle Fort's old ramparts, where the evenings are made for walking the walls.
Book an operator that runs only in season. Some Mirissa boats stop entirely in May, June and July, when the monsoon makes the south coast rough.

August · Kandy
Ten nights of drums and fire
The Esala Perahera is the island's great pageant, a run of night processions honouring the Sacred Tooth Relic kept at Kandy's Temple of the Tooth. It falls in July or August, set by the lunar calendar. In 2026 it began on 18 August with the Kumbal Perahera, moved to the grander Randoli processions from 23 August, and finished with a final street procession on the afternoon of 28 August, after the morning water-cutting ceremony. Drummers, whip-crackers, fire dancers and decorated elephants fill the streets around the lake, and the whole city stays up late.
Kandy books out for the Perahera. Reserve a hotel and a seated viewing spot along the route as early as you can, and expect premium prices.

December to March · Nuwara Eliya
Tea country, and a railway mending
Nuwara Eliya sits at 1,868 metres, with a mean temperature of around 16°C, and tea has grown on its slopes since the 1870s. December to March brings the clearest highland skies; May to September is green and cool, with dry spells between showers. Note that the famous hill country railway is only partly running. Cyclone Ditwah damaged the line in late 2025, and as of October 2026 there is no through train from Kandy to Ella. The Nanu Oya to Badulla section, which passes through Ella, reopened on 20 June 2026.
Drive from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya, stay a night, then take the train from Nanu Oya. Temporary services leave around 9am and 2.30pm and take about two and a half hours to Ella.

February to July · Yala
The leopard months
Yala is Sri Lanka's leopard country, and the best months to see them run from February to around July. As the dry season bites, water levels fall and animals gather at the exposed lakes and waterholes, which makes them far easier to find. August brings more jeeps and fewer quiet sightings. The main blocks usually close for a few weeks from early September. In 2026 the closure came early: Blocks 1 and 2 shut from 14 September to 15 October because of the dry weather, while the park's other blocks stayed open.
Book a private jeep and go out early. If you can only travel in August, add extra drives to make up for the busier tracks.

May to September · Trincomalee
The east coast's summer
While monsoon rain sweeps the south-west, the east coast has its finest months. From May to September, Trincomalee and the long, shallow bay at Pasikudah are dry and sunny, with calm water for swimming and diving. This is also whale season on the east coast: blue and sperm whales pass Trincomalee from about May to September, with sperm whales the highlight. Combine a week here with August in Kandy and an evening safari at Minneriya, where up to 300 elephants gather at the shrinking tank in the driest weeks.
Avoid the east coast from about October to January, when the Maha monsoon brings its rain. Trincomalee is a summer address, not a winter one.

Planning the trip
Where to go, how long, and how to get there
Sri Lanka is small, but its roads are slow and its weather splits down the middle. Ten days to two weeks lets you combine one coast with the hills and the ancient cities. Plan your route around the monsoon, not the other way round, and the island will reward you whichever month you choose.
- Winter sunDecember to March: the south and westStart with the Cultural Triangle and Sigiriya, climb into tea country for clear mornings, then finish with a week on the south coast between Galle and Tangalle. Add a whale trip from Mirissa and a few days in Yala before the beaches.
- Summer holidaysJune to September: the east and the hillsBase yourself in Trincomalee or Pasikudah for the beaches, and add Kandy, the hill country and an evening safari at Minneriya. In August, time it so you are in Kandy for the Perahera, and book both hotels early.
- WildlifeFebruary to July: leopards and elephantsYala is at its best while waterholes shrink from February to around July. Udawalawe shares the same dry-season window, and the Minneriya gathering builds from July and peaks in August and September, when evening drives are the best time.
- Quiet monthsMay, September and OctoberThese are the island's quietest weeks. May is very calm for visitors, Vesak lanterns light the towns, and the east coast is dry. September and October bring short, heavy showers, but prices fall and the best hotels have rooms.
Flying from London
SriLankan Airlines flies non-stop from Heathrow Terminal 3 to Colombo once or twice a day, taking about 10 hours 35 minutes. From 23 October 2026, British Airways adds three flights a week from Gatwick through the winter season, a second non-stop choice for the first time in years. One-stop routes through the Gulf are the other option.
How long to stay
Ten days covers one coast plus the hill country at a gentle pace. Two weeks lets you add the Cultural Triangle or a proper safari in Yala or Minneriya. Distances look short on the map, but hill roads are slow, so a private car and driver is the comfortable way to travel.
Getting around
The hill country railway is being rebuilt after Cyclone Ditwah. As of October 2026, trains run from Nanu Oya through Ella to Badulla, but not from Kandy. Check the Sri Lanka Railways timetable before you travel, and plan the Kandy to Nuwara Eliya stretch by road, which takes about three to four hours.
Questions people ask
The best time to visit Sri Lanka, answered
What is the best time to visit Sri Lanka?
December to March is the best time for most first visits, because the south and west coasts, the hill country and the Cultural Triangle are all dry together. If you can only travel in summer, go from May to September and head for the east coast around Trincomalee, which is dry while the south-west has its monsoon.
When are the monsoons in Sri Lanka?
There are two. The Yala, or south-west, monsoon brings rain to the south-west coast and the central hills from roughly May to September. The Maha, or north-east, monsoon reaches the north and east from about October to January. April and the September to October changeover bring short inter-monsoon storms that can hit anywhere on the island.
When can you see blue whales in Sri Lanka?
Off Mirissa on the south coast, the main season runs from November to April, with early March a good time for blue whales. Off Trincomalee on the east coast, whales pass from about May to September, with sperm whales the highlight. March and April can work on both coasts, but no sighting is ever guaranteed.
When is the Kandy Esala Perahera?
The Perahera falls in July or August, and its dates follow the lunar calendar, so they change every year. In 2026 it ran from 18 to 28 August, with the grand Randoli processions from 23 August and the final procession on the afternoon of 28 August. Book Kandy hotels and seats along the route early.
Is Yala National Park closed in September?
Usually, yes. Yala's main block typically closes for a few weeks from early September to mid-October so wildlife can drink undisturbed through the driest weeks. In 2026, Blocks 1 and 2 closed from 14 September to 15 October because of the dry weather, while other blocks stayed open. For leopards, February to July is the better window anyway.
Can you still take the train from Kandy to Ella?
Not all the way, as of October 2026. Cyclone Ditwah damaged the hill country line in late 2025. The Nanu Oya to Badulla section, which includes Ella, reopened on 20 June 2026, but trains do not yet run from Kandy. Most travellers drive to Nuwara Eliya and board the train at Nanu Oya instead.
